The 4rd Annual Rio Grande Riot

Welcome to the Rio Grande Riot -- an invitation to play games published or distributed by the Rio Grande Games company. You will have the opportunity to play a great variety of games... whatever you like best. Make yourself comfortable and get an overview from reading the following:

Do I need previous experience to play in the Rio Grande Riot?

The Rio Grande Riot is for everyone, whatever their playing ability. Experienced players will be on hand to guide everyone through the game rules, from novice to expert. If you are on your own, then the organisers will team you up with suitable opponents.

What games will I play, and how long will it take?

You can play any of the games that have been published or distributed by Rio Grande Games (which includes some games by Ravensburger, Queen, and Zoch). Some games take only a few minutes to play, others may take an hour or more. You can play a number of different games or one game more than once. You can come and go as you wish over the course of the event. It is all entirely up to you -- whatever suits you best. Many games will be provided but, if there are particular titles that you'd like to play, it is best if you bring your own copies.

What happens after each game?

Once a game is over, you should complete a score sheet in order to record the name of the game, each players' name and their finishing positions. Two of the players should sign the score sheet and hand it to one of the judges (Only the score sheets handed in before the end of the tournament will count), then play your next game. Nothing more is required of you -- the organisers take care of everything else. If you feel competitive, you may want to have a look at the posted scores every now and then to see how you rank.

How does the scoring work?
Your score in each game depends on two things: your final position in the game played and the assigned game weight. You can play the same game as many times as you wish, but only your top score in that game will count towards your total Rio Grande Riot score. It therefore pays to play in as many different games as possible, as each one adds to your overall score, even if you place last. Points are earned according to the number of players in your game.  Basically, you get 10 points for playing and an additional 10 points for every player that you beat, as shown below:

8 Players… 1st=60, 2nd=50, 3rd=40, 4th=30, 5th=20, 6th=10, 7th=10, 8th=10
7 Players… 1st=60, 2nd=50, 3rd=40, 4th=30, 5th=20, 6th=10, 7th=10
6 Players… 1st=60, 2nd=50, 3rd=40, 4th=30, 5th=20, 6th=10
5 Players… 1st=60, 2nd=50, 3rd=40, 4th=30, 5th=15
4 Players… 1st=60, 2nd=50, 3rd=40, 4th=20
3 Players… 1st=60, 2nd=50, 3rd=25
2 Players… 1st=60, 2nd=30

Your points will then be multiplied by the weight factor of the particular game. Each game is weighted according to its estimated playing time and difficulty level. The complete game list, with their assigned weights, is shown below.  Your weighted average score becomes your tournament rating.

How is the winner of the Rio Grande Riot determined?

The top 5 rated participants will compete together for one final game on Saturday evening. The final game to be played will be determined by the participants, but if they cannot decide, it will be Thurn and Taxis.

The final participants and the winner of the event will each receive a 'Winner's Certificate' suitable for framing.  Any prize support that is received through Rio Grande Games or from any of the local retailers will be raffled off among everyone who participated in the event... so everyone has a chance of winning a prize.

Games List:

Game weights are arbitrarily assigned based on average time required to play each game as well as on game complexity.  It is approximately one 'Game weight' for every half hour of game play, plus or minus 1, depending on complexity.  The maximum weight is 5 regardless of game length.  The following list was current to Jan 15, 2008.
If a game is not on the list, but is published or distributed by Rio Grande games, a weight will be assigned by a judge at the Convention:
